Nestled in the hills of the Khotang District of eastern Nepal, approximately 185 km southwest of Mount Everest at an altitude of 4,734 ft, Halesi Mahadev is one of Nepal's most revered pilgrimage destinations. Known as the Pashupatinath of Eastern Nepal, this extraordinary sacred site holds deep spiritual significance for three distinct religious communities — Hindus, Buddhists, and Kirats — making it uniquely powerful in all of the Himalayan world.

Spend approximately 1 hour at the site.

For Hindus — The Abode of Lord Shiva
Hindus worship this temple as a form of Lord Shiva. According to mythology, Lord Shiva stayed in a cave to hide from the demon Bhasmasur for 6,000 years. The natural cave where the deity resides is considered extraordinarily sacred, and the site draws thousands of devotees throughout the year. Melas and celebrations are especially common during Mahashivaratri, Chaturthi, Rama Navami, Ganesh Chaturthi, and other festivals, and Hindus flock to the temple particularly during the Shrawan month.
For Buddhists — The Cave of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche)
For Buddhists, this site is the sacred Maratika Cave, where Guru Padmasambhava attended terma (hidden treasure) of longevity teachings of Buddha Amitabha. Maratika means the "elimination of death." This is where Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) attained immortality along with the royal princess Mandarava.
Legends say that on the request of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the Amitabha Buddha taught 18 Tantras of long life, which Dakini Sangwa Yeshe recorded and hid as Terma at Maratika. For Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims worldwide, this cave is among the holiest sites on earth — a place of immortality, longevity, and supreme spiritual attainment.
For Kirats — An Ancient Ancestral Shrine
The Kirats also worship Halesi Mahadev Temple, honouring it as an ancient ancestral sacred ground tied to their own spiritual traditions, adding yet another layer of cultural and religious depth to this remarkable site.
By the overland trip, it takes about 10 hours to reach there by jeep. By helicopter, it takes about 45 minutes to reach the famous temple. The mountain roads are long, winding, and physically exhausting — especially for elderly pilgrims, families with children, or those with limited time.
Himalayan Helicopter's dharma tour eliminates all of that hardship. You board at Kathmandu's domestic terminal, soar over stunning Himalayan foothills and river valleys, land near the temple, complete your darshan and puja with ample time, and return to Kathmandu — all within approximately two hours total.
