Overview

Overview

Nestled beneath the majestic Dhaulagiri Himal range in the far west of Nepal lies a land of craggy ridges, alpine meadows, and ancient-looking mountains — the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve. It holds an extraordinary distinction: it is the only location within the entire Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal where licensed trophy hunting is legally permitted. For the serious hunter seeking a once-in-a-lifetime Himalayan experience, Himalayan Helicopter offers an exclusive heli charter service that takes you directly into the heart of this legendary reserve in ultimate comfort and style.

Why Fly with Himalayan Helicopter to Dhorpatan?

Getting to Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve can be challenging due to its remote location. A chartered helicopter from Kathmandu is the ideal way to avoid the long and difficult overland journey — not only is it more comfortable and time-efficient, but it also offers breathtaking aerial views of the Himalayas en route.

The recommended and most popular route is to take a chartered helicopter flight directly to the reserve, followed by a short hike of approximately two hours to reach the hunting camp. With Himalayan Helicopter, your entire experience — from departure to your safe return — is handled professionally and seamlessly.

About Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve

Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve was established in 1983 and formally gazetted in 1987 to protect the region from illegal poaching activities. Spread across the districts of Rukum, Myagdi, and Baglung in western Nepal, it covers approximately 1,325 square kilometres, making it Nepal's sole hunting reserve and a truly special destination for hunters and nature lovers alike.

The reserve is divided into seven hunting blocks for ease of management: Sundaha, Seng, Dogadi, Ghustung, Fagune, Barse, and Surtibang. Some blocks are known for higher concentrations of Himalayan Tahr, while others are prime Blue Sheep territory. Himalayan Helicopter can coordinate multi-block hunting combinations to maximize your chances of a successful trophy hunt.

Huntable Species

Since the reserve's establishment, species such as Bharal (Blue Sheep), Himalayan Tahr, Barking Deer, and Wild Boar have been hunted for trophies and game meat. Among these, the Bharal and the Tahr are the primary targets of international trophy hunters.

Other wildlife found in the reserve includes leopard, ghoral, serow, Himalayan Black Bear, Rhesus macaque, langur, and mouse hare. Endangered species present in the reserve include musk deer, wolf, red panda, cheer pheasant, and the Danphe (the national bird of Nepal).

Hunting Seasons

The reserve opens for two hunting seasons each year — September to November, and February to April. Planning your heli charter with Himalayan Helicopter during these windows ensures you arrive at precisely the right time for the best hunting conditions in the high-altitude terrain.

Tour Information

Permits & Requirements

All hunters are required to obtain the necessary permits before departing for the reserve. These include a General Hunting License, Secondary Hunting License fees, block reservation fees, and any additional government charges. Himalayan Helicopter works closely with the relevant authorities and can assist in coordinating your documentation ahead of your departure.

Important Notes

  • Warm clothing is essential, as temperatures at Dhorpatan's elevation can be extreme, especially in the early morning
  • Early morning helicopter departures are preferred for better weather stability and visibility
  • Weapons must be declared and may need to clear customs formalities at the airport on the day of arrival in Nepal
  • Hunting in the northern blocks, which are more remote, may require additional days and slightly higher helicopter charter costs
