2. What is included in the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour package?

Our standard package includes:

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in Kathmandu (Thamel and nearby areas)
  • Round-trip helicopter flight Kathmandu – Lukla – Everest region – Kathmandu
  • Experienced mountain pilot and ground handling staff
  • Fuel, refuelling stop at Lukla and all landing charges
  • Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee
  • Domestic airport tax

  • Emergency oxygen and first aid kit onboard
  • Government taxes and service charges

Not included: travel insurance, tips, personal expenses and anything not listed above. Breakfast is covered separately below (question 15).

3. How long is the Everest helicopter tour from Kathmandu?

The full tour takes about 4 to 5 hours, hotel to hotel. Actual flying time is around 3 hours. A typical day:

  • 6:00 AM – Hotel pickup, transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport (domestic terminal)
  • 6:45 AM – Take off for Lukla (about 45–50 minutes)
  • 7:35 AM – Refuel at Lukla (2,860 m)
  • 8:00 AM – Fly up the Khumbu Valley over Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche and Gorak Shep
  • 8:20 AM – Flyover of Everest Base Camp and the Khumbu Icefall; Kala Patthar landing when approved
  • 9:00 AM – Stop at Hotel Everest View, Syangboche
  • 10:00 AM – Return via Lukla to Kathmandu
  • 11:00 AM – Back at your hotel

Times shift with weather and air traffic, so please keep the whole morning free.

4. How many passengers can join a shared Everest helicopter flight?

A shared (group joining) flight carries a maximum of 5 passengers in an Airbus AS350 B3e / H125, the workhorse helicopter of the Himalaya. The real limit is weight, not seats: at very high altitude the helicopter can lift less, so the combined passenger weight usually needs to stay within about 350–400 kg. We ask for each passenger's body weight at booking so we can plan seating and shuttles safely.

5. Is a Kala Patthar landing possible on a group joining Everest helicopter tour?

Yes, it is possible, but it cannot be guaranteed, and any operator who promises it is not being straight with you. Since the stricter landing rules introduced after the November 2023 accident in the Everest region, high landings at Kala Patthar (5,545 m) depend on permission from the authorities, the weather and the helicopter's weight on the day.

How it works when approved: the helicopter lands first at Pheriche or Syangboche, and passengers are flown up to Kala Patthar in small shuttles of 2–3 people. Each group gets around 5–10 minutes on the ridge with the engine running. When a landing is not permitted, you still get a close flyover of Kala Patthar, Everest Base Camp and the Khumbu Icefall.

Landing directly at Everest Base Camp itself is not offered on sightseeing tours; you see it from the air, and the view of Everest's summit is far better from Kala Patthar anyway.

6. Do Everest helicopter tours include oxygen onboard?

Yes. Every flight carries emergency oxygen cylinders with masks, and our crew is trained to use them. You spend only a short time above 5,000 m, so most guests feel fine, but mild breathlessness or a light headache is normal. Move slowly, avoid heavy exertion when you step out, and tell the pilot at once if you feel unwell.

7. Can kids fly on the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour?

Yes, children can join with a parent or guardian. Our guidance:

  • Recommended age: 5 years and above
  • Ages 2–5: accepted case by case after a conversation with our operations team
  • Infants under 2: not recommended because of rapid altitude change
  • Children under 10 are exempt from the Sagarmatha National Park entry fee

For families with young children, we often suggest a lower landing plan (Syangboche / Hotel Everest View) with a flyover of Base Camp rather than a high landing.

8. What are the main stops on the Everest helicopter tour?

  1. Lukla (2,860 m) – refuelling stop at Tenzing-Hillary Airport
  2. Pheriche (4,371 m) – staging point when passengers are split into shuttles
  3. Kala Patthar (5,545 m) – the highest landing point and the best viewpoint of Everest's summit (subject to permission)
  4. Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) – aerial flyover of base camp, Khumbu Glacier and Icefall
  5. Hotel Everest View, Syangboche (3,880 m) – breakfast stop with panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam

Along the way you will see Namche Bazaar, Tengboche Monastery, Dingboche and Gorak Shep from the air.

9. Is the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour safe?

It is one of the most closely regulated tourist flights in Nepal. Here is what keeps it safe:

  • Flights are operated by licensed Nepali helicopter operators, such as our partner Air Dynasty, which keeps a helicopter stationed at Lukla Airport
  • Pilots are specialists in high-altitude mountain flying
  • Weight limits and shuttle splits are applied strictly at altitude
  • We only fly in suitable weather; the pilot has the final word and will turn back if conditions change
  • Every flight carries oxygen and a first aid kit

We recommend travel insurance that covers helicopter flights and high-altitude activities up to 6,000 m.

10. What is the best time for an Everest helicopter tour?

Season

Months

What to expect

Autumn (best)

October – November

Clearest skies and sharpest mountain views

Spring (excellent)

March – May

Stable weather, rhododendrons, climbing season activity at Base Camp

Winter (very good)

December – February

Crisp, clear mornings, cold at altitude, fewer flights

Monsoon (limited)

June – September

Clouds and rain; flights run only on clear morning windows

For late 2026, November and December are still excellent. For 2027, book October–November and April–May dates early, as seats fill fast. Morning flights give the best visibility in every season.

11. Do I need permits for the Everest helicopter tour?

Yes, if your helicopter lands inside the Khumbu. Two permits are required:

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: NPR 3,000 + 13% VAT for foreign nationals (NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals)
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Fee: NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals

We arrange both for you as part of the package. Just send a passport copy when you book and carry your original passport on the day.

12. What happens if the Everest helicopter flight is cancelled due to weather?

Mountain weather is the one thing nobody controls. Our policy:

  • Cancelled before take-off: we move you to the next available morning at no cost, or give a full refund if you cannot reschedule
  • Turned back mid-flight: you pay only for the flight time actually used and the balance is refunded or credited to a new date
  • Landing not possible at the planned point: we land at the best permitted alternative and continue the tour

Tip: keep one or two spare days in Kathmandu after your planned flight date, especially in winter and monsoon.

13. Can I book a private Everest helicopter tour from Kathmandu?

Yes. A private charter gives you the whole helicopter, so you choose the date, departure time, pace and photo stops. It is the best choice for couples, families, photographers, honeymooners and anyone who wants a flexible itinerary. Private charters can also be combined with a trek, for example trekking to Base Camp and flying back, or flying in and trekking out.

14. What is the cost of a private charter Everest helicopter tour for 2 people?

A private charter is priced per helicopter, not per person. For two people, expect about USD 4,500 – 5,500 for the helicopter, roughly USD 2,250 – 2,750 each. The price is the same for 1 to 5 passengers, so bringing more people lowers the cost per person.

With just two passengers, the helicopter is light, which makes a Kala Patthar landing far more practical (no shuttles needed), subject to permission and weather on the day.

15. Is breakfast included in the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour?

Breakfast is served at Hotel Everest View in Syangboche (3,880 m), one of the highest hotels in the world, with Everest framed on its terrace. Private charter packages include breakfast. On group joining tours, breakfast can be added at booking or paid at the hotel on the day. Expect a set breakfast with eggs, toast, pancakes, tea and coffee, and about 45–60 minutes to enjoy the view.
